Herman Jay Hicks, Jr. was born on June 7, 1949, in Houston, Texas, to Herman Jay Hicks, Sr. and Atherine Stubblefield Hicks. Herman was the first-born of three children to his parents. Later, Herman would have another sibling, Tanisha Hicks George from his father’s second marriage. Herman was raised in LaMarque, Texas but when he graduated from LaMarque High School in 1969, he moved to Houston, Texas to attend the University of Houston to study mathematics and accounting. During his first year at the University of Houston, Herman met his first wife and mother of his children, Judith Lynn Latting Hicks. Herman and Judith completed their family with two children, Julian Wayne Hicks and Tasha Lynn Hicks. While attending college, Herman joined the United States Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged in 1974, Herman returned to Houston to finish his college education at the University of Houston, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. Herman worked 10 years as an accountant before obtaining a license as a Certified Public Accountant in 1986. As a licensed CPA, Herman would eventually start his own business known as H. J. Hicks, PC, where he would specialize in tax preparation and financial auditing.

In the quest for more business opportunities, Herman moved to Dallas, Texas and later to Atlanta, Georgia where he would remain for over 20 years. While in Atlanta, Herman would continue with his private tax preparation business while also advancing his career as a local government employee at Fulton County in Georgia. Herman developed many friendships and business relationships in Atlanta. Herman’s passion was making money. He was an entrepreneur at heart and was always seeking out new endeavors that would bring him wealth. A few of those endeavors included selling perfume, running his own trucking company, investing in real estate and trading stocks. Herman worked hard and eventually retired from Fulton County after a successful career as an Assistant Audit Manager. After he retired, Herman moved back to Houston to be closer to his mother, children, and family.

Herman was a loving son and brother. He was a caring father and grandfather. He had long-lasting friendships as a testament to his good spirit and his warm soul. Herman often spoke about his brother and sisters with admiration and adoration. He deeply loved his children and grandchildren and expressed it in many ways. He loved his family and was very proud to be a Hicks and Stubblefield. Herman will be mourned, missed and remembered.

Herman is survived by his loving daughter, Tasha Hicks, grandchildren; Michigan Kenyon Bell, Augustus Jay Marion Bell, Phoenix Tre´ Bell, Julia Latting Hicks, Judy Latina Hicks and Justin Alexander Hicks; siblings Donald Wayne Hicks, Gwenda Hicks Sampson (Nathan Sampson),Tanisha George (Kevin George), Dara Hicks and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and friends. Herman is predeceased by Herman Jay Hicks, Sr., Atherine Stubblefield Hicks, Julian Wayne Hicks and Evelyn Hicks.
