March 2, 1930 – April 13, 2023

Atherine Stubblefield was born on March 2, 1930, in Grapeland, Texas, to Fannie Campbell Stubblefield and Isaac Henry Stubblefield. She was married to Herman J. Hickson on August 14, 1948. After beginning married life in Grapeland, she and Harman moved to Houston and, subsequently, to LaMarque, Texas where they raised their family. From their marriage, three children were born: Herman Jay Hicks Jr., Donald Wayne Hicks, and Gwenda Hicks Sampson.

For twenty five years, Atherine was a devoted wife and mother. In 1973, she went to the College of the Mainland to secure a certificate in clerking, after which, on September 23, 1974, she began employment as a Unit Clerk at Mainland Hospital. She was known there for running the floor and having a commitment to doing her job well. She retired from Mainland Hospital on April 18, 1991, and relocated to Houston, Texas to be near her siblings and daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them and would eventually travel to Dallas with her sister Nora Wilson to volunteer with her son Donald’s Dallas City Council Campaign and to work in his law office.

Throughout her life, Atherine remained a devoted family member on whom her children, grandchildren and siblings relied. She leaves to mourn her family and friends who treasure the time they had with her: children Herman Hicks, Donald Hicks and Gwenda Sampson; son in law Nathan Sampson; grandchildren Shana Hicks, Donald Hicks II, Tasha Hicks, Candace Sampson, Nathan Sampson Jr.; great grandchildren J’khory Gibson, Brendan Linton, Roy Sampson, Tyler Lundy, Dawn Hicks, Donald Hicks III; great-great grandchildren Jace Gibson, Janiah Gibson; brothers Arnold Stubblefield and Clarence Stubblefield; sisters Nora Wilson, Azella Donato, Marie Raymond and Ruth Simmons; and numerous nieces, nephews and in laws. Stubblefield siblings Elbert, Chester, Ruben, Albert, Wilford and grandson Julian Hicks preceded her in death.
