Sadie Mae Mayes
December 6, 1926 – August 10, 2024
Sadie Mae Mayes was born December 6, 1926 in Double Bayou, Texas. She was the second child born to Mr. Leroy and Doris (Holmes) Humphrey, Sr., and born on her father’s birthday. She attended school in Double Bayou. She became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Double Bayou in her early years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Sadie was a loving, caring older sister to her nine younger brothers and sisters. The Humphrey family developed strong, loving family bonds that still exist today, and continues with the next generation. They enjoyed family gatherings, especially at holidays. They had strong, friendly competition playing dominos and cards. She especially enjoyed the family reunions.
She was married twice. Her first marriage was to Earl Mayes (deceased), having two children, Phyllis (Otis) Shelton and Dorothy Ann. Her second marriage was to Lee Carrington, having two sons, Jimmy and Charles.
Sadie worked at a variety of jobs in the Houston area in retail, as well as cleaning/ house care to help support her children and provide opportunities to attend college. Dorothy Ann attend Texas Women College for Nursing; Phyllis attended Texas Southern University for Math/teaching. Charles attended the University of Houston studying business.
She was preceded in death by her parents, oldest brother (Leroy, Jr.), Theo ,Clarence, and Willie Humphrey, and sisters Amanda (Humphrey) Hollins, Alline (Humphrey) Williams, and daughter, Dorothy Ann Mayes.
She is survived by her brothers – Richard Charles (RC) and Lionel Humphrey and sisters Ollie (Humphrey) Mayes and Rose (Humphrey) Vital. Grandkids – Kathryn(Shelton) Gresham, Dr. Alexander Shelton, Victoria (Shelton) DeSouza , Brian Mayes, and Christi. Great Grandkids–Brian Jr. and Bria Mayes, Madelyne Magloire, Ryan, Dakota, and Matthew Anderson.
