Thelma Harmon, born on August 11, 1954, in Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away on February 3, 2024. Thelma had a remarkable life and made significant contributions to the field of law, in academia and the larger legal community.
Thelma’s passion for justice and education led her to become an Associate Professor of Law and the Director of the Legal Clinic at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. She taught and provided instruction in the areas of Mediation, Family Law, Landlord-Tenant, Probate, and Trial Advocacy. She dedicated herself to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals and advocating for the rights of the underprivileged. Thelma’s expertise and guidance were invaluable to her students and esteemed colleagues alike. She was a valued and respected member of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law’s Faculty, serving on numerous Law School and University committees.
Thelma’s educational journey was an impressive one. She was a proud graduate of Jack Yates High School in historic Third Ward and was accepted to Harvard University. But she preferred instead to remain in Houston and undertake her baccalaureate studies at the University of Houston, close to family and friends. Through hard work and perseverance, Thelma completed a five-year program in three years—a feat in and of itself. She earned her law degree from Loyola University School of Law, and ultimately passed bar examinations in three states: Louisiana, Texas and Georgia.
Beyond her professional achievements, Thelma had a vibrant personality and a zest for life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, indulging in her favorite hobbies—reading and shopping and exploring new adventures. Thelma was a dedicated member of AKA Sorority, Inc., and a member of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Rozell Harmon and Edna Harmon, sisters Nancy Ellen Harmon, Glorida Harmon Williams, and Rozella Harmon Smith.
